Afrique Sogue

Afrique Sogue Percussion and Dance is a traditional West African performing arts company based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The name Afrique Sogue, meaning “The Sun of Africa,” reflects the company’s mission to illuminate, preserve, and share the rich musical and dance traditions of the Manding and Mandinka peoples—descendants of the great pre-colonial empires of West Africa.

 

Rooted in the cultural lineages of present-day Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso, Afrique Sogue celebrates both the diversity and unity of these regions. Through electrifying performances and immersive educational programs, the company creates spaces for cross-cultural dialogue, collaboration, and innovation.

 

Under the artistic direction of Mohamed Lamine Bangoura, Afrique Sogue bridges ancestral tradition with contemporary community engagement—connecting audiences to the living heartbeat of West Africa.
